COM’S SUMMER SPECTACLE REVIEW INTRO
So I must admit, I know your suppose take notes during a play, mostly what character has what name and who’s playing them, but hen your not really paying attention to play completely. I mean the fact your also photographer for this piece, means your not paying complete attention, as it is. So must admit when look at all these strange ( to my eyes anyway) mid-evil names. I wasn’t sure which name belong to which character., and being this week was final week for 4 unit ceramics class, I spent most my time there. Also I started my 3 rd term as and Associated Students Indian Valley Campus Student Senator ( of which we just had are first meeting) after 2 years out of office. ASIVC Senator without they ASIVC existing anymore, just they IVC part, still there, even less so as it seems each semester I return there. So didn’t get chance to fact check. Not even being journalism student any more for EchoTimes, and wondering if anyone will even read this. But my journalism for COM is labor of love (though I do question how much that love is precipitated back toward me as a student), so here it goes anyway.
GREEN BIRD - REVIEWED
This humorous modern take on the Green Bird (see links for info on it), well the best way to describe this is a hipster satire ( I mean this as a time frame style, and not a modern reference, no one would use any more). Part play, part musical. Where one actors sounds a lot like a lot film and TV acting done especially in early 60’s. Like the brother in the plays it like he’s part Jerry Lewis crossed with that actor in original Little Shop of Horrors and Bucket of Blood.
Where mid evil characters get cell phone calls, and refer to corporations as gods. There’s a queen trapped alive under a castle, unaware of this, her spouse, the king believes he is know lost forever to him, her spouse the king, courts a woman (played with a lot passion by the actress), with a secret either is aware of, where her brother fancies a female statue, as his love of his life. There’s a evil queen mother, play with great flourish by the actress.
Never completely learn what green bird is, as play with great oddity by that actor. There’s a wise King of the Statues. There is a quest for a singing apple, who’s played by red gown young actress, for the most part play is silent, waiting for her moment, sitting under apple tree, with apples hanging from her ears, as if there where branches.
There’s siblings mother, played actress with great fun, as she was classic overbearing NYC Jewish mother, could be for all I know.
All and all it’s a lot fun, not among the greatest productions ever, but it is a good play, worth your efforts to see. It’s far enough form the traffic, and on Friday, and Saturday Evenings at COM, and Sunday afternoon, where school if not closed is mostly closed, except for the production, there not much to distract you from naturally projected voice, and live mid-evil styled orchestrations of the live music. I found smile growing on face as I watched all these talented actors do there thing. One thing, there generally many scenes, many things going on stage, so you‘ll find your eyes moving between them, so wont be able see everything going on. You can always see all the actors since its outside, so actors always on stage, or in site of the audience, and a part of play, if not the main action of the moment of the play. I'ts Intresting how these themes are replayed over and over again, one of themes in the play remind me Star Wars Episode 6, well others remind me of a modern main stream musical.
